Maceió locals pose on the corner of Rua 2 de Dezembro and Rua do Imperador.
The Correio  (Post Office)  building,  seen at left,   now houses  the  Delegacia  do
Ministério da Fazenda (Ministry of Finance Office). The steep street at right, Ladeira
do Farol,   present-day  Ladeira Eutáquio Gomes de Melo,  leads  to  the  Farol  de
Maceió  (Maceió Lighthouse),  at top-right. On December 2, 1851, the lighthouse’s
foundation stone was laid, but a century later, on April 15, 1952, structural fissures
mandated that the building’s demolition begin. Plans have been made to
reconstruct the lighthouse near present-day Praça Dom Ranulpho.
Watercolors enhanced this circa-1915 picture postcard.
