The steamer Santos, seen here in the Port of Vitória around 1910. Built in 1899 for the German shipping company Hamburg-Süd, this passenger and cargo ship carried a 54-man crew and up to 430 passengers. On August 4, 1914, with the outbreak of World War I, the ship sought refuge in the Port of Recife. Brazil would later enter the war, seizing the vessel on June 1, 1917. The ship became part of the Lloyd Brasileiro fleet and remained in service for the company until 1953. |
