RAUL SOARES
O The Lloyd Brasileiro steamer Raul Soares at the Port of Santos in the 1930s. Built in 1900, this old Hamburg-Süd liner first went by the name Cap Verde and then Madeira. Her main role was transporting emigrants to Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. She carried 80 passengers in first class and 500 in steerage (with bunks), plus 180 crewmen. Lloyd Brasileiro acquired the ship in 1925 and put her into service on its Brazil to Hamburg line for 40 years. The Raul Soares had an immense funnel, the largest of any Brazilian ship, and thus was easy to identify. The liner survived two World Wars and met an ignoble end: in 1964, at the beginning of Brazil's military dictatorship, she anchored at the Port of Santos as a floating prison for political dissidents. A year later she was scrapped.
